Ballpark figures, not quotations. Ranges compiled from price guides published by South African irrigation, building-cost and quote websites, checked 19 October 2026 and rounded where needed. They are not our prices and no contractor is bound by them. Installation figures cover supply and installation unless marked part only. Repair prices often exclude parts. Borehole drilling, electrical work, slabs and paving reinstatement are usually extra. Published guides vary widely, so treat the ranges as a sanity check only. None of the sources state whether VAT is included, so confirm VAT on every quote.

What Affects Irrigation Prices
New installation or repair
A new system is priced on area, zones and parts. A repair is priced on fault finding, parts and digging, and usually starts with a diagnostic fee.
Manual or automatic
Manual systems need valves and taps only. Automatic systems add a controller, solenoid valves and wiring, and smart controllers and sensors add more.
Number of zones
Each zone needs its own valve, wiring and pipe run. Low water pressure means more, smaller zones.
Components
Branded commercial-grade heads, valves and controllers cost more upfront but are easier to service and find parts for.
Access and trenching
Rocky or clay soil, slopes, paving and established beds slow trenching and add reinstatement costs.
Pump or tank integration
A pump, tank, filter or borehole connection can add more than the irrigation itself. Sizing depends on measured flow and pressure.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a garden irrigation system cost?
Published guides put a basic system for a 100 m² garden at roughly R4,000 - R7,000 and a mid-range system for a 300 m² garden at roughly R16,000 - R28,000. Smart, multi-zone systems cost considerably more.
Why are irrigation quotes so different?
Quotes differ in the number of zones, part brands, pipe sizes, trench depth, controller type and whether a pump, tank or reinstatement is included. Compare scope line by line.
Is a call-out fee normal for irrigation repairs?
Yes. Diagnostic visits are commonly charged separately, roughly R400 - R950 in published guides, and some contractors deduct it from the repair if you go ahead.
Do irrigation prices include VAT?
Not always. None of the published guides used here state whether VAT is included, so ask every contractor.
How much should I budget for maintenance?
One published guide suggests roughly 5 - 10% of the installation price per year. A single maintenance visit is roughly R950 - R2,500.
