How Irrigation Installation Works
- Check the water. The contractor measures pressure and flow at your tap, borehole or tank.
- Plan the zones. Lawn, beds and other areas are split into zones that each run at the right pressure.
- Trench and lay pipe. Main and lateral lines go in, usually HDPE or PVC, with valves in boxes.
- Fit heads and drip. Sprinklers, drip lines and emitters are placed for full, even coverage.
- Wire and programme. The controller is connected, each zone is tested and run times are set.
- Hand over. You are shown the controller, valve positions and how to adjust the schedule.
Ask each contractor how they test pressure and how many zones they plan.
Irrigation System Types
- Pop-up sprays. Short-throw heads for small and medium lawns and narrow strips.
- Rotors. Longer throw for larger lawns, with fewer heads and lower application rates.
- Drip lines. Slow, direct watering at the roots of beds, shrubs and vegetables.
- Micro-sprays. Low-volume sprays for mixed planting and ground covers.
- Controllers. From basic timers to Wi-Fi controllers that adjust to the weather.
Sprinklers or Drip
- Sprinklers. Cover lawns evenly. Some water is lost to wind and evaporation, so early-morning watering works best.
- Drip. Puts water at the roots with little waste. Needs a filter and pressure regulator, and is not suited to lawns.

Ballpark figures, not quotations. Ranges compiled from price guides published by South African irrigation, building-cost and quote websites, checked 19 October 2026 and rounded where needed. They are not our prices and no contractor is bound by them. Installation ranges cover supply and installation. Repair and service prices often exclude parts. Pumps, tanks, boreholes and paving reinstatement are usually extra. Published guides vary widely, so treat the ranges as a sanity check only. None of the sources state whether VAT is included, so confirm VAT on every quote.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does this service work?
You send one enquiry. Relevant independent irrigation contractors contact you and quote. You compare and choose, or appoint nobody.
Does it cost anything?
No. Requesting quotes is free and there is no obligation. Your agreement is with the contractor you appoint.
Do you install irrigation systems yourselves?
No. This is a quote-comparison service. Independent contractors assess, quote and do the work.
How much does an irrigation system cost in South Africa?
Published South African guides put a basic residential system at roughly R10,000 - R30,000 and a mid-range automatic system with several zones at roughly R30,000 - R60,000. Garden size, zones, controller and water supply change the price most.
Should I use sprinklers or drip?
Sprinklers suit lawns. Drip suits beds, shrubs, hedges and vegetables. Most gardens use both, on separate zones.
Do I need a pump?
Not always. Many municipal connections have enough pressure for a small system. Boreholes, tanks and low-pressure sites usually need a pump, sized by the contractor after testing flow and pressure.
Are there watering restrictions?
Restrictions are set by each municipality and change with dam levels and season. Check your municipality's current rules before setting watering times.
