Irrigation Installation is fitting a complete watering system: assessing the water supply, planning zones, trenching, laying pipe, fitting heads or drip, wiring the controller and testing everything. It suits homeowners, body corporates and businesses putting in a first system or replacing one that cannot be saved.

Compare Installation QuotesWhat Installation Includes
- Site assessment. Areas to water, soil, slopes, sun and shade, existing paving and services.
- Pressure and flow test. Measured at the tap, borehole or tank. This sets how many heads each zone can run.
- Layout and zones. Lawn, beds and other areas are separated so each zone gets the right water.
- Trenching. Trenches for main and lateral lines, with sleeves under paths and driveways.
- Pipework and valves. HDPE or PVC pipe, valve manifolds in valve boxes, and fittings.
- Heads and drip. Pop-ups, rotors, drip line or micro-sprays placed for even coverage.
- Controller and wiring. Controller mounted, valves wired, and any sensors connected.
- Testing and handover. Each zone flushed and run, heads adjusted, schedule set and explained.
System Options
- Sprinklers for lawns. See sprinkler system installation.
- Drip for beds, shrubs and vegetables. See drip irrigation installation.
- Automatic control with timers or smart controllers. See automatic irrigation systems.
- Manual systems with taps or quick-coupling valves, for small or budget jobs.
Problems a Proper Installation Avoids
- Dry patches and overwatered corners from poor head spacing.
- Weak spray at the end of a zone from too many heads on low pressure.
- Pipes cracked by spades, roots or vehicles because they were laid too shallow.
- Water wasted on paving, walls and windows.
How Quotes and Work Proceed
- Send photos, rough sizes and your water source.
- Contractors visit or quote from photos, depending on the job.
- Compare zones, parts, pipe and inclusions, then appoint one.
- Installation, testing and handover.

Ballpark figures, not quotations. Ranges compiled from price guides published by South African irrigation, building-cost and quote websites, checked 19 October 2026 and rounded where needed. They are not our prices and no contractor is bound by them. Ranges cover supply and installation. Soil preparation, electrical connections and commissioning can add 15 - 25% according to one source. Paving reinstatement and water-source work are usually extra. Published guides vary widely, so treat the ranges as a sanity check only. None of the sources state whether VAT is included, so confirm VAT on every quote.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does irrigation installation take?
A typical home garden often takes one to a few days, depending on size, soil and number of zones. Large sites are usually phased.
How deep should irrigation pipes be buried?
Deep enough to avoid damage from spades, aeration and traffic. Ask each contractor to state trench depth on the quote, because cheaper quotes sometimes save on depth.
Will installation damage my lawn?
Trenching cuts narrow lines through the lawn and beds. Good contractors lift and replace turf and leave the site tidy. Confirm who reinstates paving and planting.
Do I need a pump for a new system?
Only if measured pressure or flow is too low for the planned zones, or the water comes from a borehole or tank.
Can I install irrigation before landscaping?
Yes, and it is often easier. Lay sleeves under paths and driveways before paving so pipes can cross later.
