Ballpark figures, not quotations. Ranges compiled from price guides published by South African irrigation, building-cost and quote websites, checked 19 October 2026 and rounded where needed. They are not our prices and no contractor is bound by them. Cape Town and Western Cape figures are marked; the rest are national ranges. Installation ranges cover supply and installation. Repair prices often exclude parts. Wellpoint and borehole prices do not include connecting the irrigation. Published guides vary widely, so treat the ranges as a sanity check only. None of the sources state whether VAT is included, so confirm VAT on every quote.

Watering Rules in Cape Town
- No water restrictions have applied since 1 November 2020, but the City's permanent water-saving rules still do.
- Watering is allowed only before 09:00 or after 18:00. Programme the controller to match.
- Hosepipes must have a spray nozzle or self-closing device.
- Paving may not be hosed down with municipal water, so keep sprinklers off driveways and paths.
- Restrictions can return when dam levels drop. A controller with a seasonal adjust or Wi-Fi makes changes quick.
Wellpoints and Boreholes
- Register boreholes and wellpoints with the City, and apply at least 14 days before sinking a new one.
- The City says groundwater must be used sparingly and its use metered.
- Groundwater in parts of Cape Town is high in iron and stains walls and paving. Ask about filtration and head placement.
- Wellpoint pumps need sizing to the zones they feed. See borehole irrigation systems and irrigation pump installation.
Dry Summers and Winter Rain
Cape Town gets most of its rain in winter, so gardens need the most water from late spring to autumn. Turn watering down or off in the wet months, or fit a rain sensor. Rainwater tanks fill in winter and run low in summer, so plan mains or wellpoint backup for rainwater irrigation systems.
Wind and Sandy Soil
- The summer south-easter blows fine spray off target. Water early or late, use rotors or low-angle nozzles on lawns, and put beds on drip.
- Sandy soils drain fast. Shorter, more frequent cycles work better than one long run.
- Near the sea, use plastic or stainless fittings and an outdoor-rated or enclosed controller.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does irrigation cost in Cape Town?
A published guide puts irrigation systems in Cape Town at roughly R15,000 - R80,000, depending on garden size and water-saving features. A small drip system for beds can cost much less.
When may I water my garden in Cape Town?
The City's permanent water-saving rules allow watering only before 09:00 or after 18:00. Set your controller to these times and check the City's site for any new restrictions.
Do I need to register a borehole or wellpoint in Cape Town?
Yes. The City requires boreholes and wellpoints to be registered, and new ones applied for at least 14 days before they are sunk.
Why does my wellpoint water stain walls and paving?
Groundwater in parts of Cape Town is high in iron. Keep sprinklers off walls and paving, and ask about filtration or switching beds to drip.
Can I run my irrigation from a rainwater tank in Cape Town?
Yes, but tanks fill in winter and often run low in the dry summer, when the garden needs most water. Plan a backup supply.
